If you are traveling with a group, riding the same corridor weekly, or piecing together a multi-stop trip, regular Saver and Value bucket fares are not your best option. Amtrak's Group Sales, Multi-Ride, and USA Rail Pass programs all reduce per-trip costs significantly when used appropriately.
Groups of 8 or more
Amtrak Group Sales (1-800-872-1477, option 4) offers up to 60% off Saver coach fares for groups of 8 or more traveling together on the same train. Group block reservations require an itinerary and a deposit; the booking specialist coordinates seating, equipment availability, station assistance, and meal counts on long-distance trains. Group fares are non-refundable and tickets must be issued to named individuals at booking.
Student Advantage and Veterans Advantage
Student Advantage (full-time enrolled, $30/year) offers 15% off most Amtrak fares year-round, including the Acela. Veterans Advantage offers an equivalent discount for active and veteran service members. Both stack with other promotional fares, but not with Saver Fare bucket pricing.
Multi-Ride passes
Heavily discounted Multi-Ride passes are available on the Keystone Service, Hartford Line, Empire Service, Downeaster, Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, Cascades, and most state-supported corridor services. Ten-ride passes valid 60 days save 50% over individual coach fares; monthly passes save more for true daily commuters. Multi-Ride passes are non-refundable and non-transferrable but allow travel on any train without specific reservation.
USA Rail Pass
The USA Rail Pass — 10 segments over 30 days for a flat fare — is the right product for travelers piecing together a long-distance trip with multiple stopovers. Each "segment" is one ticketed train, including ones that connect through major hubs. The pass is sold in coach only; sleeping car upgrades are paid separately at the room's standard price minus the Saver coach fare.
California Rail Pass
The California Rail Pass offers seven days of travel within a 21-day window on the Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, and the connecting Amtrak Thruway bus network. The full pass-versus-individual-fare math is broken out in the North American Rail Pass Atlas.
